There & Away: Flying and driving options for out-of-town and local guests!

Vail, Colorado is about 1.5 hours west of Denver, 2 hours from Denver's DIA airport. It sits along I-70 West, and you'll want to use I-70 West exit 176.

Event Locations

Lion Square Lodge:
660 W. Lionshead Place
Vail, Colorado 81657
Toll-free phone number: (800) 525-5788

Kaltenberg Castle Royal Bavarian Brewhouse:
600 Lionshead Mall
Vail, Colorado 81657
Phone number: (970) 479-1050

Kaltenberg is in Vail's Lionshead area, near the slopes, about 20 yards from the Lionshead-Eagle Bahn Gondola lift to the top of the mountain and 20 yards from the Lion Square hotel. Don't be overly confused, it doesn't look like a castle on the outside, it's actually the old Gondola house.

You have to walk to the Brewhouse, it's in the Lionshead village area. There is public parking right along the main South Frontage road about 2 blocks from Kaltenberg. You can't miss the large and ugly parking structure.

The hotels we have listed are within a 2-3 block walk, or can be accessed by the Vail Village shuttle, which runs from one side of Vail (Village) to the other side (Lionshead).

Airports & Driving

Denver - Denver International Airport/DIA (airport code DEN)

Driving from Denver / DIA.

This is pretty easy. If you get a rental car at DIA, they'll show you how to get on the road. Simply put: Get off the airport property via Pena Boulevard onto I-70 West. Go west for 2 hours.

Exit Vail (exit 176, not exit 180) and you're there! Go around the roundabout towards Vail Village and back under the highway. Then, depending on which hotel you've opted for, you'll probably head right on to South Frontage road towards Lionshead, where the hotel we are at is located. Turn left on Lionshead Circle (at the Best Western), then left on Lionshead Pl to get to Lion Square Lodge, which is right up against Vail mountain.

We suggest renting a car from Denver airport. Otherwise, consider a shuttle between DIA and Vail, via Colorado Mountain Express, located at http://www.cmex.com or Denver Mountain Express http://www.resortshuttle.com/ . Prices for both are about $60-$75 one-way and about $130 roundtrip per person.

Colorado Springs Municipal (airport code COS)

Not a great option (vs. DIA) unless you get much cheaper tickets. I checked and didn't see anything much less expensive than DIA.

Driving from Colorado Springs/COS.

Essentially, you will fly into Colorado Springs Municipal Airport, drive up I-25 into Denver, then head west along route 6 which meets I-70 about 12 miles later, then head west on I-70 West. Expect 3 hours+ for the entire drive.

Eagle/Vail Airport (airport code EGE)

This is closer than either Denver's airport (DEN) or Colorado Springs (COS) if you don't like to drive. But, especially during the off-season, there are are no flights that don't come out of Denver. So, you don't save a lot of time since you'll have to switch planes, get to Eagle/Vail airport, then drive East on I-70 about 45 minutes to Vail. It's also guaranteed to be more expensive.

During the Fall season, there are only 2 daily direct flights, from Denver to Eagle/Vail, via United at 9.15am (flight #5687) and 5.30pm (flight #5681).

Driving from Eagle/Vail (EGE.

Take I-70 EAST for about 45 minutes. Exit Vail (exit 176) and you're there!

Here are Mapquest instructions from Denver International Airport to Vail and Lion Square Lodge.

Kaltenberg Castle is right next door to Lion Square Lodge.

Locals driving up for the day!

If you are coming up for the day from Denver, go ahead and park in the free Vail parking lot at Lionshead, right along Lionshead Circle, very big, hard to miss! That's about a 2 block walk to Kaltenberg, just go towards the mountain and to where the Eagle Bahn Gondola is.

NOTE for those driving back to Denver or not staying in Vail after the reception: Talk with any of the wedding party and we'll get you a taxi ride or a room for a few hours to chill out or for the entire night - It's absolutely no problem at all.

We have reserved a "crash room" just for this purpose.

Remember, 1/2 the fun is being there, the other 1/2 is reliving all of the embarrassing moments!!!! :-)

The Art of Brewing:
Raw Materials

To create the fine lagers and pilsners, the purity laws of Germany are first felt in the choice of raw materials.

Only the very best are used: finest Hallertau aroma hops, malt from selected two-row summer barley (for Weissbier, a similar selected wheat is used) and Kaltenberg's own specially cultured pure yeast. The water used has a purity standard higher than normal drinking water.
